A new developer blog for Overwatch 2 has just hinted at some major changes that could be coming to the way Ultimate abilities work in the future. This potential change could come as part of a reduction in the number of one-sided matches in Overwatch 2. Players could have enough Overwatch 2 Coins ready to go in the game.
Overwatch 2 Game Director Aaron Keller recently published a blog discussing Season 5. He talked about how Overwatch 2 is different this time around in terms of Battle Passes and teased more about the four special game modes that will appear in Season 5.
However, one of the most interesting parts of this developer blog is the last paragraph. keller discusses stomps - one-sided matches where one team dominates the other. According to the post, Watchmen 2 has been discussing ways to reduce the number of stomps in the game. While it may initially seem like a problem with Watch Dogs 2's matchmaking system, Keller believes that other factors (such as ultimate revenue) may be more to blame. To that end, he believes the solution may lie in "looking at our core mechanics and game modes and making adjustments here."
Since the original Overwatch, the ultimate game has been a game changer. A well-timed ultimate can turn the tide not only of a battle, but of an entire Overwatch 2 match. Heroes typically gain ultimate skills by healing as well as dealing and taking damage. Considering that a team that wins a battle will usually do more of this, they will gain ultimate skills more often, creating what Keller calls a "snowball effect. This, combined with the fact that the winner usually chooses where and when the next battle occurs, can make their victory inevitable.
There is no information on what these specific changes might be. Watchmen 2 may allow players to generate more ultimate skills when they take damage or die so that the losing side has a better chance of respawning, or it may slow down the winning side's ultimate generation or after a certain number of ultimate uses. Players can only speculate until Watch Dogs 2 releases more information on the subject.
Needless to say, Watch Dogs 2 players are interested in this potential change. Ultimate skills are a core part of a hero's kit, and the rate at which they are generated has remained relatively constant throughout the life of Overwatch. Changing this formula could alter Overwatch 2's metadata in some unexpected ways. Whether they are worried or excited about this potential change, Watch Dogs 2 seems to be taking the stomping issue seriously, so players can expect to hear more on this topic soon.
